Old School Hack--the Fictive Way
Dwarven Memory of the Assail
In the adventure Parting of the Mists, the wizard Donbar revealed a fragment from ancient writings of his people. The writings are now considered heretical, possibly. Here is the fragment he shared with Captain Skylar in the ruins of Claveria.
I [name](1) am come to witness this [gathering] in order to watch and record as I have always recorded. Although here of my own free will since the time of the [agreement], I must admit I feel compelled to attend. The last of my kin [dwarves] have long since departed leaving me to record the memories.
I must admit, I underestimated the sheer numbers of the [Assail].(2) I thought them to be shattered after millenia of battle with [the enemy].(3) Even as they bring the corpses of their Gods into the circle. They hold their heads high, their backs straight. Defeated maybe, but not crushed, as was intended.
It is time. Those that could not make it must be left behind. The [casters/shaman?] are gathering. The bodies are prepared. The [chiefs] of the great tribes have spoken. I watch the Assail, their rhythmic drumming pounding through the bones of the island. Faces twisted in a final frantic attempt to hold onto that spark entwine it within themselves, to retain but a fragment, a memory of that fire. But in their eyes, resignation. Commitment to nothing less, than eternal vengeance.
The ritual has begun. Drums. Solemn, ordered, the reveries of life cast aside. The corpses in the center slowly dissolving to ash within the raging conflagration. The sparks of power emerging to settle within the Assail. To energize their great monuments and artifice. Drums. A profound change, timelessness. Their bodies altering, adapting to that spark within. Dessication, drying up, the heat. How much time has past, unknowable. The flames flicker and finally die. The mist rises, water from their bodies, connection. Drums. A new fate, same enemy. Drums. Vengeance. Duty. Drums.
Note: The script trails off into gibberish at this point.
(1) Believed to be Drell, the watcher but uncertain.
